For my woven fabrics, I dye my yarns before they are woven. This method of woven fabrication is know as ikat which is an Indonesian craft technique. It is a lengthy process. For these particular samples I did 7 rounds of dyeing and resisting my warp and sometimes weft yarns too (double ikat) in order to achieve an intricate pattern of colour along my warp. This took a number of days as dyeing silk yarn needs to be approached with care and I was dyeing over 800 yarn ends at once which would later culminate in a sample made up of thousands of threads. I greatly enjoy experimenting with intricate craft methods and combining them with digital and modern printmaking approaches to create new, exciting and innovative woven textiles.
